Global cyber agencies have dropped a new guidance document, aiming to shore up the AI supply chain by defining minimum elements for Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) specifically for artificial intelligence. The paper, Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) for Artificial Intelligence - Minimum Elements, penned by the G7 Cybersecurity Working Group, builds on prior work from June 2025 and lays out seven “clusters” of information intended to give both producers and users of AI systems a clearer picture of what’s under the hood.
What’s Actually Inside the AI SBOM?

Will organizations invest the resources to meticulously document their AI models, datasets, and infrastructure in this standardized format? The collaboration across agencies like CISA (US), NCSC (UK), ANSSI (France), and others is a positive signal. It shows a unified front. But the effectiveness hinges on the ability of private sector developers and deployers to translate this granular detail into actionable security improvements. We’ve seen companies struggle with basic SBOMs for traditional software; AI adds layers of complexity related to training data, model drift, and emergent behaviors that traditional SBOMs don’t fully capture.
Ultimately, the G7’s SBOM for AI guidance is a step in the right direction, acknowledging the critical need for transparency in AI supply chains. It’s a foundational element, a blueprint that needs significant refinement and, more importantly, a strong ecosystem of tools and practices to make it truly effective.
